Ah, the hype the advertising executives will come up with to get your attention. Gigantinormous. Gigantic and Enormous all rolled into one. Travelocity coined a new word just to get your attention. Arent they clever. They are having a Gigantinormous sale.

? You save $100 instantly off your reservations when you book one of their Flight+Hotel TotalTrip packages or one of their Last Minute Deals packages. The reservations must be for two people or more and there is a three night or longer stay required.

? The package must be booked by November 16, 2006 and travel must be done before January 7, 2007.

? To get the $100 discount, you need to enter the promotional code GIANTSALE when checking out.

? After you make your reservations for your initial travel, Travelocity will send you another promotional code good for $200 off your next qualifying Flight+Hotel TotalTrip package for two or more people with a minimum stay of five nights.

? To take advantage of the $200 off offer, you must book by March 31, 2007 and the trip must be taken by July 31, 2007.

.
So its time to do a little comparison shopping. How does their Gigantinormous sale hold up against their competitors prices? Since Im wondering if this is a way to save on holiday travel, Im going to find the price for a fictional family of four (2 adults plus 2 kids – ages 5 and 8) to fly from Chicago to Philadelphia for Christmas.

Travelocitys Deal

Plane Reservations – American Airlines leaving Chicago OHare at 10:55pm on December 23rd, direct flight to Philadelphia International; American Airlines leaving Philadelphia International at 11am on December 29th, direct flight to Chicago OHare
Hotel Reservations – Best Western in Center City – one room, two double beds
Travelocitys bottom line after Gigantinormous discount $1568.01 for flight, hotel, taxes and fees.

Expedias Deal

Plane Reservations – American Airlines leaving Chicago OHare at 12:40pm on December 23rd, direct flight to Philadelphia International; American Airlines leaving Philadelphia International at 4:15pm on December 29th, direct flight to Chicago OHare.
Hotel Reservations – Expedia could not get me reservations at my hotel of choice Best Western in Center City – so I choose a comparable three star hotel in Center City – Club Quarters.
Expedias bottom line – $1,760.58 for flight, hotel, taxes and fees. Almost a full $200 more than Travelocitys price.

Hotwires Deal

Plane Reservations – American Airlines leaving Chicago OHare at 2:15pm on December 23rd, direct flight to Philadelphia International; American Airlines leaving Philadelphia International at 8am on December 29th, direct flight to Chicago OHare.
Hotel Reservations – Hotwire could not get me reservations at my hotel of choice Best Western in Center City – so I choose a comparable three star hotel in Center City – Doubletree Inn
Hotwires bottom line – $1864.00 for flight, hotel, taxes and fees. Almost a full $200 more than Travelocitys price. Almost a full $300 more than Travelocitys price.

Pricelines Deal

Pricelines best price with undisclosed flight details (including a possible plane transfer) and a comparable three star hotel in Center City was $1,659 for flight, hotel, taxes and fees.

The winner – Travelocity by a Gigantinormous $200-$400 savings.

Now, the savings are just on the initial trip booked with Travelocity. If you add the additional $200 savings on a future trip booked with Travelocity the savings may be even greater. Of course, any wise traveler would comparison shop even with the $200 discount.

US Airs Offer – Not Quite Gigantinormous, but a Savings Non-the-Less

US Airways is extending an invitation to its frequent flyers to escape from the chilly fall weather to the warmer climate of the Caribbean, Mexico or Central America. They have special fares to these destinations if you book now and travel before December 15th. There is a minimum three night stay associated with the offer.

In addition, you will receive a $25 gift card for each seat booked that can be used for a later flight with US Airways or one of its affiliates. The e-mail said that this offer is only good for members of their frequent flyer program.

So it seems as if this seasons deals are coming in the form of save a little now, save a little more later. The deals may be truly good for those who are planning to travel both sometime this fall and again later on in the year or early next year./pbr

Tips for Traveling with Children

10 Dec

Author: Sandy Rajsicbr
Source: downloadbr
br
Are we almost there yet?
This is the question that every parent dreads to hear when riding in a car. Even worse is when your children start fighting because they get impatient sitting in the car for long periods of time.
Here are some tips to combat the issue of the children getting bored and unruly. As a matter of fact, with a little planning, you can eliminate this problem before it starts.
The most important thing to be prepared for with a long road trip is the possibility of someone getting motion sickness. It may be helpful to purchase an over-the-counter motion sickness medicine. One person getting motion sickness can make the trip miserable for everyone in the car.
Aside from the misery of being ill, another important thing to be prepared for is boredom. This is what causes the children to get restless and punchy. You can easily combat boredom by making sure that you have plenty of entertainment for them. First, you can have your kids bring a book. (As long as reading doesnt cause or worsen motion sickness.) Reading can keep the older children occupied for hours. However if reading causes nausea, you might want to consider an audio book. Everyone in the family can help pick the audio books. This can keep the whole family entertained for a pretty long time. Of course, younger children will get bored from audio books quicker than everyone else.
You may want to invest in a portable DVD player. These little gems have fallen in price and can really keep smaller children entertained for a longer period of time than an audio book.
For an opportunity for a great family bonding activity, you may want to play some road games. Following is a list of some entertaining family road games.
1) ABC Game-Find letters of the alphabet on road signs, billboards, etc.
2) Woody-Get a point when you see a car with wood panel sides. Set a certain level of points in order to win. Predetermine a prize for the winner.
3) The name game-Pick a letter of the alphabet and have everyone call out names that begin with that letter. Person with most names is the winner.
4) As a derivative of the Woody game, pick a type of car such as VW Beetle (Slug-Bug), PT Cruiser (Cruiser Bruiser), Hummer (Hummer Bummer). When I was a kid, my brothers would punch people when they saw one of the car types. Back then we did the Slug-Bug, Slam Trans Am, and Sock Cop. I am happy to say that the women in the family took over the rules of this one. Now if you see one of these car types, you call it out and get a kiss. (Less bruises) The person calling out a car also has the option to save up ten and get a hug when the car stops at a rest stop.
Other items that you will want to consider taking on your road trips in order to make them more enjoyable are as follows:

-Frisbee or Ball: Allows for some exercise at rest stops.

-Plastic box: Age-appropriate for each child to hold supplies (the lid will make a good desk.)

-Bottles of water: For drinking and cleaning (not messy like drink boxes)

-Blanket: For naps

-Paper towels: For cleanups

-Snacks: Healthy finger foods are best, crackers are especially good because they can ease nausea.

-Compass: Fun for the kids if they want to help navigate

-Trash bags: For cleaning and wet clothes
Since I have a toddler, I try to limit the length of my road trips. The only lengthy trip that my family has taken with her was to Disney World. We chose to take an airplane to minimize the hours that she would be strapped in. I was surprised by how much she loved the airplane. We did take plenty of things to keep her busy. She was very content with looking out the window for most of the trip. Now, she looks up at the sky and points out any airplanes she sees. She also tells the airplanes hi an bye and waves at them.
Good Luck with your trips!

Travel Nursing – Smooth Ride Or Bumpy Road?

10 Dec

Author: Scott Knutson -br
Source: articleage.combr
br
Travel nursing is an up-and-coming profession that appeals to many nursing professionals for several reasons. Excellent pay and benefits, the chance to travel at the expense of someone else and variety are among the positive points of travel nursing. Sound great? Its not all the bowl of cherries that some believe.

The idea of getting paid to travel appeals to many people. The problem is that we want to have time to take in the sights, relax and enjoy our travels. Travel nursing is similar in some ways to driving a truck. You may get to see some incredible sunsets and view awesome scenery, but youre seldom going to have the opportunity to stop and smell the roses, visit those tourists destinations and take photos (unless you snap them from the window of a moving vehicle). In many cases, those panoramic views will be nothing more than spots from an airplane window.

So whats all the fuss about travel nursing? There are some positive points. You DO get to travel. While its not like a vacation, how many people do you know who have seen the world? Even getting to view Paris, France from a moving vehicle is better than never having seen it at all. And while there are those cases that require every bit of your time and attention, many patients who travel are stable enough to do so. They may also be up for enjoying at least some of the trip and to share the memories of those views – even if theyre all from the inside of a moving vehicle.

Once you get away from the fact that youre traveling and that you may not be seeing as much as youd like, there are some real benefits to traveling nursing. Pay is one of the big benefits. Many companies advertise pay from $25 to $75 per hour, depending on the demands on your time, the amount of experience you can offer and the length of the trip. On the downside, be sure that the money is sufficient. $25 an hour isnt much if youre working three hours and then spending the night waiting for your next assignment.

Aside from the tangible benefits, theres always that goal that health care professionals have to help people in need. Travel nurses become responsible for their patients during a trip. Those trips are sometimes long, difficult journeys. During that time, the travel nurse can literally be the difference between life and death for critically ill patients. But remember that those patients and their families typically have some driving reason for the trip. Perhaps its someone who fell ill during a vacation in another country. Maybe its an opportunity for a better treatment facility or one closer to friends and family. Whatever the purpose, the trip is usually a step toward the hope of a better life. As a travel nurse, you can be part of that.

Theres no doubt that travel nursing provides an excellent opportunity for many, though its not for everyone. If you enter this profession knowing all the facts, you may find that travel nursing is exactly the career move youve been looking for.

Travel Gift Ideas – Christmas Presents

05 Dec

Author: Nomadrick Chapobr

Looking for travel gift ideas? Here are a few that make great Christmas presents or just good old travel gifts.

Travel Gift Ideas

Whether for work or fun, people that travel a lot are easy to buy for. There are simply a ton of gadgets and travel accessories that can satisfy your need for travel gift ideas.

1. Dreamsacks – Okay, heres a nasty little secret about traveling. Hotels dont always wash sheets and definitely dont wash comforters. Yes, it creeps me out to think about it as well. Dreamsacks are designed to keep the creepy crawly bacteria, funguses and bugs off of you. Dreamsacks are essentially sleeping bags made from sheets, to wit, they are thin. Most even come with a built in pillow because if the sheets are sketchy, one doesnt really want to even contemplate the pillows. Dreamsacks will set you back between $40 and $60.

2. Relief Bands – Relief bands are the latest, greatest way to stop motion sickness. If youve ever flown on Air Turbulence Airlines, youll know the immediate benefit of these bands. Worn like a watch, relief bands send a small electronic shock into the bottom of your wrist which counters the nausea impulse to your brain. No, it doesnt hurt and it is a lot better than getting intimate with those popcorn bags in airline seat backs. Expect to pay between $60 and a couple hundred bucks depending on how fashionable you want to look while bouncing around in your seat. Good for boats and cars as well.

3. Japanese Paper Soap – Perhaps one of the greatest travel accessories ever made. For any traveler, bars of soap are a disaster. They never stay in their cases or wrapping resulting in soap suds and gunk everywhere. Japanese paper soap solves this problem nicely. The paper is, well, paper, but has built in soap. You simply get your hands wet and rub a piece of the paper between them. Instant suds! When done, toss the paper out. Pretty cool, eh? This incredible invention will set you back a whopping $10 for 50 sheets. Heck, I use them at home.

4. Nomad Travel Journals – A little self-promotion here. Nomad Travel Journals are compact writing journals that let travelers keep notes about their trips. Really great for creating a record of who was on the trip, things seen, people met, contact information such as email address, phone numbers and so on. As the years pass, you can read back through your travel journal to relive trips and laugh yourself silly over funny events you might otherwise forget. A tremendous gift for student travelers and backpackers. You can click the link at the bottom of this article to see the travel journals which cost $25 with case.

Shopping for the holidays can be stressful. If youre buying for a traveler, any of the above gifts will be a hit.br

Dont Let the Unexpected Ruin Your Vacation – Get Travel Insurance

02 Dec

Author: Kevin Hansenbr
Source: downloadbr

Traveling can be very expensive. Most people plan their trips well in advance and save money to make the most of their trip. However, a vacation can be ruined in an instant by the unexpected. If a member of the family becomes ill, a sudden storm makes your tropical vacation impossible or theres an unexpected heat wave during your planned ski vacation, your trip may be ruined. Travel insurance can give you peace of mind that all your efforts will not be wasted.
Travel insurance covers a variety of expenses to save you from wasting the money you invested. Travel insurance covers trip cancellations and interruptions. Travel insurance can also provide you with medical coverage in case of an accident or unexpected illness. Damage to checked luggage is also covered with travel insurance. Theres no faster way to ruin a vacation by arriving only to find the airline lost your luggage entirely. Travel insurance will cover that loss so you can continue enjoying your getaway.
With the recent storm activity that has devastated popular vacation spots around the world, emergency evacuation is a concern. This can sorely strain a tight budget but travel insurance will cover those costs. Travel insurance will also often cover theft or vandalism that may occur. Leaving your hotel only to come back to find your valuables are gone can put a damper on any vacation. Travel insurance will give you the confidence that unexpected emergencies will not ruin the trip youve been planning and saving for.
The type and amount of travel insurance you will need depends on the length of stay and your location. You may not need travel insurance to cover terrorist activities when going to Florida but it may be a wise investment if you are exploring the pyramids of Egypt. Check online to compare travel insurance costs and coverage. Also, your travel agent will be able to give you valuable advice on travel insurance including which travel insurance is most popular for your type of trip. Check your credit cards as well to see if they offer travel insurance. Many major credit cards offer reduced rate travel insurance to their members.
Travel insurance is not expensive, especially compared to the cost of most vacations. You can often choose travel insurance to suit your particular needs or get all included travel insurance packages. The prices for each vary so research what your needs are and only buy the amount of travel insurance that will be necessary to cover unexpected emergencies that may occur. Do not overbuy travel insurance because it will be a waste of money.
Travel insurance can bring peace of mind to the vacationer. After saving for your trip and planning your dream vacation, you dont want to lose your investment because of an emergency thats beyond your control. Losing your belonging either by theft or accidental loss can put stress on an otherwise relaxing trip. Travel insurance will let you continue to enjoy your getaway and cover you for those unexpected problems that always occur at the most inconvenient times.

Tips For Traveling With Children

01 Dec

Author: Chloe Bilboabr
Source: articledashboard.combr
br
A lot of people believe that travel is an essential part of any childs education, and quite rightly so. But how often have you heard the parents complain about how cumbersome their kids have been to them when they have taken them out. It is not that parents dont want to travel with their children but on the contrary parents love to be in the company of their children. It is just that children do give them trouble and try their patience while traveling. But here we can try to solve some of your problem with these tips to make traveling with kids an enjoyable and fun experience.

A good way is to involve the kids in planning the vacation. Ask them for inputs allow them to pick out places that they would like to visit. Give them complete details about the place that they are going to visit and what all will they see. This way you will find that your children are more cooperative even in visiting places like the museum.

Another cool trick to get kids more helpful around you in the house is to give them money to do the chores. You can tell them they can save this money to spend on the trip. You will be amazed at how energetically your kids do the chores. This also makes them look forward to the trip with more interest.

Another way that you can prepare your children for your upcoming vacation is to buy them one or two books so that they can read up on the location where youre traveling to. The more that they know about the area where youll be visiting the more they can plan what they want to do on the vacation.

In case you are going to a foreign place with a foreign language you can start to teach your children the language. It is not only educational but also gets them very excited and interested. Start with simple greetings such as thank you and good morning etc.

One or two weeks before the launching of your vacation you can buy your children their own backpack to take onto the plane or into the car with them. Allow them to have a choice in what goes into their pack and allow them to take things that will keep them busy on the plane or in the car. This can include books, music, paper and pens, and travel games.

Older children may be past the toy stage, put a travel journal can be a great opportunity for them to write down details about the trip. Choose the type of journal that lets the child add pictures and other important mementos from the trip – theyll create a scrapbook that they can enjoy for years to come.

Another option to consider is purchasing inexpensive cameras for your children (provided they are old enough to take pictures). There are many reasonably priced cameras, including disposable cameras that let the kids decided what events are important to them and what pictures theyd like to take. Dont nag your kids about taking pictures, if they see something they like they will take a picture. The point is to help them have fun memories of the trip later.

When youre booking your vacation make sure that you book your rooms in hotels that accommodate families with children. If you can arrange to stay in places where there is a pool it will be an added bonus. A pool is a great way for you and your children to unwind at the end of long day of traveling and sightseeing.

Traveling with kids can be either a pain or pleasure depending on how you approach it. Kids will be kids they are very active and need to be entertained. With the above tips hopefully you will be able to have a great trip with your children/pbr

What Are the New Travel Laws Regarding Passports For Canadians Traveling to the US?

25 Nov

Author: Adriana Notonbr
Source: ezinearticles.combr
br
Since the tragic events of 911, there have been many changes to the laws when traveling from Canada to the United States. These changes are designed to enhance security between the two countries. When a Canadian travels to the US, they should be aware of the new travel laws regarding Passports.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) is one law that Canadians should learn about. It is a US law mandating that all travelers, including US and Canadian residents, provide a passport or other approved secure document when entering the United States. This law applies to all travelers, including children.

Canadians who travel by plane to and from the United States must provide one of the following documents: a passport or a NEXUS card to be presented at all U.S. airports when coming back to Canada. For example, if a Canadian travels to the US by vehicle, but returns to Canada by plane, a NEXUS card will be required before they can board the flight.

When Canadians enter the United States by land or water, they are mandated to provide ONE of the following documents: a passport; a NEXUS card, a Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card, an enhanced drivers license (EDL) or enhanced identification card, or a Secure Certificate of Indian Status.

For Canadians under the age of 15, they must provide verification of their Canadian citizenship, such as an original or a photocopy of a birth certificate, or an original citizenship card. Canadian citizens 18 years of age or under who are traveling with an organized group may provide proof of Canadian citizenship only. This makes it easier to make school trips to the US.

There have been some concerns about meeting all of the requirements so the US has provided some flexibility on the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) law. However, the Canadian Government warns that the extent of this flexibility is the decision of the U.S. officials.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative was created after the implementation of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 (IRTPA). This act mandated that every traveler have a passport or other approved document that proves ones identity when coming into the United States. The purpose was to help the Department of Homeland Security identify a traveler quickly.

As of August 15, 2007, the Canadian Government has implemented measures to make renewing ones passport easier. The Simplified Passport Renewal Program permits Canadians who meet specific eligibility criteria to renew their passport using a less complicated form and without submitting such documents as proof of citizenship, supplementary identification, and a guarantor declaration. Under the renewal program, one will just need to submit the small form along with two new photos, the application fee, and their last passport. As well, Passport Canada enacted a simpler guarantor policy, which allows most adult Canadian passport holders to act as guarantors for first time applicants.

In order to avoid any travel disruptions, before Canadians travel, they should be aware of the entry requirements for the United States.

Kids Travel Tips – Let The Games Begin

25 Nov

Author: Darlene Berkelbr
Source: articledashboard.combr
br
Have you ever traveled with kids? Traveling with kids can be a very enjoyable vacation or it can be a visit through the land of insanity. Every parent searches high and low for the best kids travel tips prior to heading out across the great unknown with their darling children in tow. The constant banter of arguments in the back seat, one sibling repeatedly touching the other or the other siblings invading the invisible line of the other siblings side of the car, can continue until the parents eyes want to cross.

Regardless of where youre going on your vacation, chances are at least one of the kids will get bored along the way. Thats why its essential to have a variety of kids travel games in mind before you even leave the house. Being prepared is crucial. That way when your kids start shouting Mom, are we there yet? you can respond with something better than just No.

Games of license plate and state sign alphabet are great for older kids that can read but the young travelers often find that they have nothing to do but whine and cry. The following suggestions wont make the trip any shorter but they might make it peaceful. Scavenger Hunt: Here is a travel game that would delight older kids and younger travelers. You would have to make up a list of things to look for in advance. For instance, you could include things like yellow flowers, flashing lights, a hotel, a billboard with a picture of a car on it, a boat on a lake, or anything else general and relatively easy to spot.

Perhaps you are going on a trip to somewhere you have been a time or two before, for instance to grandmas house. In that case, you could make a specific list that includes items the kids will see en route while traveling. You could even make a little quiz with questions like Whats the name of the town where we stopped at the rest area?

Kids Travel Tips Technological Highpoint is DVDs

To beat the little rascals at their own games, it is easy to take control over the back seat while still driving the car. The most valuable kids travel tip is one that a parent can buy at any shopping mall or electronics store, the mini DVD player. The gift of silence is golden when traveling with young children on a long road trip. Even parents who hate the amount of television their children watch on a daily basis may find the idea of owning a traveling DVD player more palatable than listening to their children whine.

Artistic Kids Travel Tips

As with all that is good, while on the long road trips with children, they will soon tire of the DVD player as well, so variety must be provided to encourage the tiny tots to get along with one another. As kids travel tips go, the arts and crafts shoebox is a project that can be made at home and left in the car for just such occasions.

Creation is quick, easy and cheap. First, take a shoe box, a long piece of elastic, blank paper (cut to fit inside the shoebox), crayons, pencils, pens, small ruler, stencils and any other small items for arts and crafts that are child friendly for arts and crafts in a vehicle while driving. Cut two small slits (a bit smaller than the width of the elastic) in the lid of the shoebox. Be sure to make the cuts at each side of the width on one end only, leaving the length complete. Once the cuts are made, take the elastic and string it through both holes. Tie a knot or sew the two ends together on the inside of the box lid.

The elastic works as a holder to keep the sheets of paper in place while your child uses the lid of the box as a drawing table. The box should be completely assembled when in use as the lid is stronger when on the correctly place on the box. The box itself holds all supplies inside, the art box is complete within itself; it provides, table, storage and security tab to hold art paper in place during the artists creative expression./pbr
