Denali National Park In Alaska – 2006 Travel

The best sightseeing I have ever experienced was this year during a recent trip to Denali National Park in Alaska. I could not have hoped for better weather, wildlife viewing opportunities or friends to share it all with. Our accommodations at the Denali Princess Lodge were fantastic as well.

This fall I was lucky enough to get a call from my brother, an aspiring photographer. He had just been awarded a Fall Drive In Permit to Denali National Park. They are issued by lottery and allow a limited number of drivers to enter the park by vehicle. There are only four days in the entire year in which you can do this. I was thrilled, excited and eagerly awaiting my adventure of a lifetime.

We enter the Alaska Park around 4:30 am so that we could beat the other drivers and make it to a pass called Polychrome for the sunrise. Polychrome got its name for multitudes of colors displayed throughout its rocky layers. Normally this is quite a site but at sunrise it was absolutely amazing. We were also able to catch a great viewing opportunity of Mount McKinley at sunrise. There were a few people around for this and it truly was a marvelous Alaskan experience.

Next we were able to see some wildlife up close. We came across three brown bears, a mother and two cubs. They were eating berries just off the side of the road. Around the next corner we came across a pack of wolves. They were out hunting and just happened to be heading unknowingly straight towards the brown bears. We had to turn around to watch this incredible encounter and I’m glad we did.

As the wolves approached the brown bears they let their presence be known. They surrounded the bears and consistently went in close then pulled back to a safe distance while trying to drive the bears out of their territory. The mother bear was somewhat concerned because of her cubs. She kept standing up on her hind legs to see over the vegetation and follow what the wolves were up to. This of course led to many great photo opportunities. Finally after about an hour or so the bears moved back and went over the mountain to the next valley.

We continued our trek back into Denali National Park to the very end of the road. Roughly 90 miles back you will find Wonder Lake. Alaska has many beautiful lakes but this one was simply amazing. The water was crystal clear and so calm you could see the reflection of Mount McKinley just as if you were looking into a mirror. We spent some time at the little pullout the park has there and then began our return trip.

On the way back out we saw several moose. This time of year the moose in Alaska are in rut and you will find many Bull Moose ready to compete for the females. We only saw a little confrontation between the moose however we did see several Bull Moose with racks that had to have measured over 60 inches wide. That is quite impressive by all accounts.

We came across several Alaskan Dall sheep, more brown bears, a beaver, spruce hens, a falcon and a plethora of ground squirrels. The fall colors were out, the sky was blue and this was definitely a once in a lifetime trip through Denali National Parks in Alaska. In my opinion, it was well worth the cost of the travel to Alaska.

Traveling With Oxygen

Traveling With Oxygen Traveling with oxygen can be very intimidating but with proper planning it can be accomplished comfortably and safely. You don’t have to give up the adventures of traveling. You just have to make your arrangements in advance and be willing to take the extra time to confirm details prior to your trip. Let Air Systems Medica assist in your travel planning.

Air TravelMost U.S. airlines and many overseas airlines can provide service for passengers requiring oxygen. The FAA requires a physician’s statement of your oxygen needs in order to fly on a commercial airline. You cannot bring your own oxygen on board and you must use airlines supplied oxygen. Requirements vary from airline to airline but, they all require arrangements be made in advance and they all charge for in-flight oxygen. Some airlines require only 48 hours advance notice while others require seven days notice. The best rule of thumb is make arrangements as far in advance as possible. All airlines charge for oxygen, but the charges vary. Some airlines charge per canister, but most charge for each leg of the flight. The charges generally range between $50.00 and $150.00 per leg. This means if you have to change planes on your trip you will be charged twice. Therefore, if possible it is better to take a direct flight or even one with an extra stop, but no plane change. Airlines don’t provide oxygen for in terminal use even during layovers. You are responsible for making these arrangements separately. (Note: Some first aid stations in airports have oxygen available.) Some cylinders have an oxygen flow meter that adjusts from two liters to eight liters, while others offer either a low flow (2LM) or high flow (4LM). You cannot check oxygen cylinders with baggage, but most airlines will allow you to carry an empty portable tank either on board or checked with baggage. Tips for planning air travelStart by checking with your physician to make sure it is safe for you to travel. Contact the airline you want to use as far in advance as possible. The arrangements are best made through their special services or medical department. Tell them you require in flight oxygen and ask their requirements. Find out what oxygen flow they can deliver and if they provide a mask or nasal cannula. Some airlines only provide a mask but will allow you to provide your own oxygen cannula. Confirm the arrangements 48 hours prior to your flight. It is a good idea to arrive early at least an hour and a half on domestic flights.

CruisesMost cruise lines will accept passengers who require oxygen. Advance notice of at least 10 days is required. A doctors letter is required and you must arrange and provide your own equipment and oxygen. To get specific requirements of the cruise line of your choice, contact their reservation number and ask for special services or their medical department. If you would like to go on a cruise, but would like to have support available, Air Systems Medical offers assistance for traveling oxygen users.

Train Travel – AmtrakOxygen equipment can be brought on board, but you cannot rely solely on on-board electrical power. You must have at least a 12 hour backup supply of oxygen that does not require the use of on-board electrical power. Oxygen tanks and associated equipment must be underwriter’s Laboratory (U.L.) or Factory Mutual (F.M.) listed. No more than two 75 pound or six 20 pound tanks are permitted on-board per passenger. You should be aware of the total time of your trip so you can bring an adequate supply of oxygen. You should also bring at least 20% additional oxygen in case of delays. If you are unable to bring enough oxygen (which maybe necessary if your oxygen is in use continuously), you will need to arrange with an oxygen supply company to resupply you at enroute stations. Check with a reservation sales agent to be sure that your train is stopping at those stations long enough to allow for the oxygen delivery. You must notify Amtrak that you will be bringing oxygen on-board at least 12 hours in advance, but I highly recommend that you make your reservations as far in advance as possible and confirm the arrangements a day or two prior to departure. Bus Travel – GreyhoundYou must give Greyhound 48 hours notice if you are traveling with oxygen. However, it is a good idea to make reservations as far in advance as possible. When you’re making reservations, ask to speak with someone in the Greyhound customer relations department. Traveling By LandWhen traveling with oxygen tell you doctor about any altitude changes you may encounter during your trip. Your flow rate prescription may need to be altered. When traveling by car, be sure to safely transport and store your oxygen tank. Keep it away from heat and flame and do not store it in the trunk where it may get hot. Keep in mind that your oxygen tank releases small amounts of gas periodically, so you should keep a window cracked. If you will be traveling by bus or train, check with the bus or train company to see if they have any rules about carrying oxygen on board. Also, make sure your oxygen equipment can be used independently of the train’s electrical power. Many local dealers belong to a network of oxygen providers and can also assist with the arrangements. Excellent Day Trips From Phuket Island – Thailand

Phuket is named the Jewel of the Andaman. Or is it maybe the prime gem in the crown of Thailand’s tourism? However, Phuket is just the core of a spacious wonderful playground. And the other part of the ‘crown’ is worth discovering, even if the tropical fabulous beaches you’re sunbathing on seems so great you never want to get away from them. Phuket sightseeing tours are a must.

Making day trips from Phuket Island is definitely a must when you visit this South East Asian tropical piece of Heaven. Within a few hours ride or trip by boat are several mind-blowing landscapes including the renowned Phi Phi islands, the wonderful Khao Lak coast, the eye-opening Pha Nga Bay, exclusive scuba diving off the Similan islands, and the breathtakingly beautiful karst-scapes of Krabi. There are national parks boasting lush forests, picturesque fishing villages, spectacular waterfalls, crystal clear waters, private tiny islands, pristine mangroves and exclusive beaches to seek out.

Phuket is without a single doubt Thailand’s best developed and most popular island, a high standard, jet-set travel destination that has become a very upmarket place during the last decades. If you’re travelling to Phuket for your next holiday you’ll invariably find yourself based at one of several wonderful bays lined along the West Coast. From this location you can either rent a private car or use the option taking one of the available day trip tours to a destination of your choice. This is highly recommendable and there are both many travel agents and opportunities.

For first time visitors exploring the island itself is absolutely a great idea. There are numerous exciting and splendid beaches. To reach the island’s north takes about a one-hour drive. This area has not been developed and tourists do not dominate the scene. The east coast’s mangroves offer an altogether different look of Phuket. While visiting this area you might want to cool off in Khao Phra Thaeo National Park’s Bang Phrae Waterfall or drop in on the ‘singing gibbons’ at the Gibbon Rehabilitation Centre. Tours to this area of Phuket are very rewarding.

The best scenery can be found offshore, the first thing on you itineraries list should be a trip to Phi Phi. This distinctive craggy island is formed like a butterfly. The island featured in the Hollywood movie The Beach and was world news because of the Tsunami tragedy. Actually there are several islands, and the majority of the available trips stop off for some mind-boggling snorkelling adventures en-route. Food is mostly served once you arrive at Phi Phi Ley’s paradisiacal Maya bay. Only campers and park rangers are allowed to spend the night here so you’ll have the immaculate beach all to yourself. Phi Phi Don is more dramatic and was drastically overdeveloped before the gigantic Tsunami washed it all away. On a tiny sandwich of coconut palms the resorts are found between two gorgeous bays, with rising to the blue sky karst cliffs all around. Once you’ve reached this spot you probably not want to make the trip back to Phuket!

Similarly popular and impressive is Pha Nga Bay’s unique karst seascape, enjoyed free promotion in the James Bond movie, The Man with the Golden Gun. Now also known as the James Bond Island, this is a must-see on all trips from Phuket but its all part of a gigantic theatre of pillars, dotting this vast bay and must be ranking as the most photogenic spot in the whole Andaman. Lunch will be served at the idyllic fishing village of Koh Phan Yee, which is positioned in the water on stilts. Don’t forget purchasing some souvenirs and stroll around this remarkable community. Kayaking among the karst cliffs and caves is especially rewarding.

If diving is your thing and you have just one opportunity to see the finest, then you may want to join a few days lasting trip to the Similan islands which are located West of Phuket. There is also a protected marine reserve and diving excursions or day trips are the only way to reach the area’s unspoilt reefs, or swim in the clear blue ocean. If you do not have a dive certificate, no worries there are plenty of available courses. As an alternative you could take a tour to Hong Island, between Krabi and Phuket and simply enjoy underwater snorkelling and unwind. This unique island boasts a hidden lagoon inside, reachable at low tide only through a cave tunnel.

Renting a car for a drive into the hinterland is also a great option. Phuket is by a short causeway linked to the mainland and after that you have the freedom, roaming the lush isthmus provinces of Southern Thailand. Travel to the north to Khao Lak, to explore a more untouched and wild shoreline, and some fabulous coastal parks. Khao Sok National Park is a bit beyond this with its vast lake, magnificent rainforests and distinctive landscapes. In the park chalets you can even stay overnight. Thai tropical national parks feature fantastic ecosystems full of streams, waterfalls, nature trails, a few animals and varied birdlife.

Even Krabi is a popular tourist destination attracting many visitors, it can conveniently be reached within a 90 minutes drive from Phuket and features some of most distinctive landmarks in the region. But this is a completely other destination!
