Although he made his career driving around a track at speeds of more than 180 mph, Rusty Wallace, newly retired NASCAR driver and Nextel Cup champion, loves spending low-key time on the open road with his wife and their three children. The Wallace family knows road trips can be stressful, especially when you add kids to the mix. However, with a little planning, creativity and preparation, road trips can be a cherished experience for all. Here are a few tips from the professional to make your next road trip fun for the entire family:

#8226; Safety first. In the early days of my racing career, drivers had to be mechanics too, Wallace said. I know the importance of making sure your vehicle is in tip-top condition. Wallace recommends having a mechanic perform a once-over on your vehicle before the trip. But dont forget to pack an emergency road kit just in case.

#8226; Plan ahead. With todays unpredictable fuel costs, a wrong turn can be costly, said Wallace. He recommends a trip-planning tool such as Microsoft Streets Trips 2006 with GPS Locator to help your family map out the perfect route in advance. With a reassuring voice to guide the way and mapping information that is accurate and easy to use, youll know exactly what to expect along the way. Streets Trips 2006 with GPS Locator goes beyond simple driving directions to provide travelers with an easy way to plan personalized trips.

#8226; Keep the kids entertained. Taking vacations is supposed to be fun, but after spending hours in the car your family may arrive at the destination in anything but a good mood. Nowadays its easy to keep kids entertained with portable DVD players and such, but then you miss some valuable bonding time. Our family plays games and takes a lot of breaks to stretch our legs and take in the scenery, said Wallace.

#8226; Make pit stops fun. What would the great American road trip be without experiencing a bit of classic roadside Americana? From the Worlds Largest Ball of Twine in Cawker City, Kan., to the 18-foot-tall Paul Bunyan statue in Bemidji, Minn., there are landmarks all over the country to be discovered. If you are ever in Rusty Wallaces home state of North Carolina, he recommends visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

#8226; Make it a family affair. The journey is an important part of the trip, particularly when youre traveling by car. Its an opportunity to see new places and spend time together as a family. Wallace suggests involving the entire family in the planning. A weekend fishing trip may not always be the ideal getaway for my wife and daughter, Wallace said, but if the whole family is involved in the preparation, we can plan activities that will make everyone happy./pbr
If you love to travel and are always after fun adventures with your friends and family, then a lightweight travel trailer is perfect for you. With a spacious interior and cargo area, a travel trailer provides a safe and secured temporary abode in your favorite destination, without your having to leave the convenience and comforts of your home.
The lightweight versions of towable travel trailers retain all the modern conveniences of the traditional vehicles, plus they come equipped with the necessary space and amenities for sleeping, cooking, dining, showering, and relaxing.
The versatility and practicality of the lightweight trailer makes it a hot item among the newly introduced RVs. Typically, these trailers weigh less than 400 pounds and are usually less than twenty-six feet in height. Whether you own a small vehicle like a light pickup truck, SUV, or a minivan, these trailers are designed to assure you of a convenient and safe towing experience, plus you get a better fuel mileage. They can also be lowered for storage in a garage or carport. The gasoline-consuming wind drag is also eliminated since they can be lowered to car-top level during travel.
Several lightweights have special features like a push-button slide-out capability that enables travelers to expand the kitchen area, as well as the sleeping, living, and dining spaces with twice as much floor area. For a well-protected and durable floor, linoleums are installed, even under the carpeted areas of the trailer, and the walls are usually highly insulated so as to keep you warm during winter and cool during summer.
Aside from the basic water and lighting systems, many recreational lightweights have an added entertainment center and upgraded lighting package that promise a luxurious and comfortable trip.
Whether youre planning on a weekend getaway or a quick camping trip, lightweight trailers provide comfort, security, and luxury that turn your usual vacation experience into an extra special one.
br
I dont know about you, but when the snow drifts start disappearing in my back yard, I think spring camping road trip! Just the thought defrosts my winter weary spirit. Day dreaming, exploring and planning my camping season begins with the important task of getting the travel trailer ready for the road. (We own a 1977 Airstream. Keeping current on maintenance is a high priority for us!) Learning the hard way, we begin spring maintenance in the fall while winterizing the trailer for winter storage. As we shut the trailer systems off, we test and inspect each for needed repair. Making note of essential repairs in the fall gives us time to budget funds and schedule repair time before its time to travel. We create a separate wish list for non-essential repairs and upgrades. Pre-planning in the fall has reduced the stress of on road surprises for us.

Our family hates vacation side trips to find a local RV dealer for unexpected repairs. Wasting precious vacation time camping in the dealer parking lot is not our idea of exploring the scenic back roads! By scheduling repairs for early March, we give our dealer plenty of time to complete work before the spring rush. Most often the trailer is left winterized, in case of continued freezing temperatures. De-winterizing, the first weekend out, is a task we can easily accomplish on our own and it doesnt take long to do. That first annual family camping trip is our spring road trip to test our wheels. Although on road surprises still occur occasionally, we are far more prepared to face them with humor, if we have done our fall homework. Sometimes on road surprises become our favorite travel tales. Ive included our RV/Travel Trailer Maintenance Check List. Think Spring! Think spring camping road trip!

Once in a while, you might get the urge to escape from your busy and stressful life and plan on having the perfect getaway with family and friends. Consider a camping or fishing trip in travel trailers – its a fun and rewarding recreational activity. Traveling in small trailers is very practical, as it saves you accommodation expenses.
Small travel trailers are designed to be lightweight and usually weigh barely 2,000 pounds and stand at 10-feet long. A small truck or just about any kind of family vehicle can easily tow them. In addition, the aerodynamic design that most of these trailers possess makes them very fuel efficient.
In transportation and temporary living accommodations for travel, recreation, and camping, small travel trailers are the best option to meet the level of comfort and convenience needed by small families or even older couples who are enjoying their retirement. You can still feel as if you are in the comforts of your home; these trailers also come equipped with the necessary amenities such as a small kitchen area, a bathroom, comfortable sleeping and dining areas, and even entertainment facilities.
Though simple and engineered to be lightweight, small trailers are also loaded with cooking facilities as well as a refrigerator, heating, air conditioning, a self-contained toilet, a shower, water tanks, and a separate electrical system. These trailers also feature slide-out rooms so you can enjoy additional space.
Whether for weekend camping trips or a cross-country sojourn, this kind of vehicle will surely go places easily as compared to its larger counterparts, as it can easily travel within tight campsites or constricted pathways.
If you are interested in owning one of these vehicles, you can visit and consult various manufacturers. But if you are not sure whether to opt for the hefty and more luxurious RVs, then you can select a smaller one in a price that wont disrupt your budget. They come in various styles to suit your taste and lifestyle.

Twenty years ago traveling in motor homes and RV’s was for the silver-haired generation, but today you can find travelers’ of all ages and income brackets enjoying the countryside. The mystery and excitement of touring firsthand, up close and personal with the scenery of your choice, is available in a motor home or an RV. Many places even rent them for you to take on your trip and when you are finished, then simply return the vehicle with none of the hassles of ownership. But if you would like to own your home on wheels, there is no time like the present to look into all the styles and models that are available.
Recreational vehicles have come a long way from what they used to be. There are now different classes of motor homes, Class A, B, and C. There are travel trailers, 5th wheels, campers and recreational vehicles, RV’s, of all sizes shapes and colors. The best place to look for your dream traveling home is the Internet. You will find many new and used vehicles of all imaginable models – some good sales, and some terrific buys. The key is too keep shopping ’til you find just exactly what you would like, because it is out there, and waiting for you!
Traveling across the United States and Europe in a motor home or RV has grown into such a popular past time that you will find fellow travelers at your next rest stop. And even more in places like motor home parks and camping sites. These are the best places to find your fellow travelers. And then there are some wild and crazy folks who live in their double wide, expandable motor home all year long. They are ready in a moment to take off on a trip across the county or across the country. They manage this so well because their permanent home is actually a “port”, more or less, for their motor home. When they arrive back home, they simply pull into their driveway, and right into the frame of their house. As this pastime grows, more and more communities such as the “Outdoor Adventures” in central Florida, are popping up and more and more travelers hit the roads in their RV’s and motor homes.
