Top 21 Travel Games For The Car- Part One

We all have memories of long road trips when we were kids, having to put up with our parents choice of music and staring out the window for hours waiting for the next toilet stop. Thankfully there have been improvements since those days (ie portable DVD players), when all we had was a few sheets of paper, notebooks and the faithful walkman. However, nothing beats old fashioned preparation. With five children, I still dont go anywhere without a pencil case, paper, and snacks to overcome back seat mayhem. Keeping the kids (and adults) entertained is still one of the keys to a successful trip. If you have a list of games you can play, especially if you are planning a driving holiday that includes lengthy road trips, you will be a step ahead when the inevitable whining and are we there yet? questions begin. Below is a list of our favourite travel games and activities that are easy to explain, as short or long as you want them to be, and no doubt will become topics of conversation years down the track.

1. I Spy
There is no such thing as a lengthy road trip without a game of I Spy, even if it only lasts a minute (in my car). This game can go on and on until a parent has enough of guessing an abstract object that you passed ten minutes ago. It will keep the kids entertained for a good amount of time if you are clever. For those who were deprived of this great Aussie travel game, just say, I spy with my little eye, something beginning with(letter of the alphabet) and your companion will have to look around and guess the object. You can make rules as you go, like only outside the car, or not guessing the same object twice.

2. Who am I?
Its simple enough. You think of someone famous and can only answer yes or no to questions that everyone else in the car asks you (one at a time). To vary it a little you can move to only cartoon characters, movie stars or someone whos not even famous at all. It just helps if everyone knows who it is. Whoever guesses the correct answer gets the next go. You can also guess animals, or things, and change the question to What am I?

3. Scavenger Hunt
Get the kids to prepare these cards before the trip begins. This will add to the fun of playing. Draw or simply write the name items such as a yellow car, a stop sign, a service station etc, then hand out five cards each during the trip. As soon as the item is spotted, you move on to the next one. The first to finish their five cards wins. You can vary this game to just spotting types or colours of cars, or more or less cards per game played.

4. Scramble This is always a fun game to play with paper and pencil the only requirements. Someone calls out a street name (preferably longer than four letters) and everyone has two minutes to write as many words as they can using the letters of that street name. After the time is up, everyone adds up their scores to find the winner. To score, you get two points for every word but only one point if the word was used by someone else. Its so much fun you will want to keep playing every time you see a lengthy street name.

5. Alphabet game
This is a lot of fun especially if you are passing through a number of towns and activity, not for the long, lonely stretches. Everyone has to find words beginning with letters of the alphabet, beginning at A and ending at Z. The words can be on street or shop signs, and whoever spots it first must claim it so the others know its been taken. First to get to Z wins.

6. Bingo
This game that needs to be prepared before you leave, but is very easy to play. Just draw up grids for each person (apart from the driver) with objects on the squares that you would normally see on a long trip, ie truck, cow, stop sign etc. Use stickers to cover the square when the object has been spotted. It wont be long before someone will be able to shout BINGO.

7. Animalia
We played this game on nearly every family holiday. A designated person would start by saying an animal of their choice, ie DOG. Then the next would have to say an animal starting with the last letter of that animal, ie GOAT. The next would have to start with the letter T. It goes on until someone cant think of an animal and they are out. There are a number of variations of this game. You can start the same way, but you have to repeat the animals that have already been called out, ie DOG, GOAT, TIGER etc. Whoever forgets an animal is out of the game.

8. Game Bags
Every child loves to have a special bag with surprises in it. This is a great idea if you have the time before the trip begins. Just fill it up with a new pack of pencils, small colouring in book, chocolate bar or lollipop, small games, torch, wad of paper, just use your imagination and choose your time carefully when you hand it out as it will be received well especially if they are bored and starting to fight.

9. Licence Plates
This is lots of fun for the imaginative. Every licence plate that you are driving behind has three letters. Every passenger has to think up a different meaning of the three letters. There are so many combinations that you could keep going for a while, until someone gets really tired of thinking. This is one of those travel games that start and stop when you least expect it. Its fun trying to beat each other to think up the meanings, as some of them can be tricky, especially the Vs and Qs./pbr

Try a Spirit of Tasmania Trip For Some Adventure on the High Seas

27 Nov

br
From the Australian mainland, you can fly To Tasmania in less than 2 hours. Why take 9-11 hours to get there by sea?

Well Greg (my husband) and I decided that we wanted to experience a Spirit of Tasmania trip at least once, so we went online and made a booking. We booked about a couple of months in advance. We went with Ocean View Recliners since they sounded pretty comfy.

You can take a vehicle along with you on the ship. However we had arranged to pick up a pre-booked rental car on arrival in Tasmania.

We were dropped off at the Port Melbourne terminal around 7.30am. The departure was scheduled for 9am. It was so thrilling to see the Spirit of Tasmania I waiting there for us.

First impressions

On first boarding we found ourselves at the foot of an escalator. It sure seemed like we were in a building rather than on a ship! We explored the surrounds – found the eateries, bars, shops, cinema, games room and just made sure we knew how to get around. There was even a childrens playroom where some little ones were already having a good old time!

The journey begins

Going by the numbers that came out on deck, leaving Port Melbourne was considered a special occasion. As the ship moved away, we watched Port Melbourne get smaller and smaller. We passed lots of sailboats happily enjoying the good sailing weather.

For breakfast we got a couple of croissants and coffee from the cafe/bar on Deck 9. We ate out on deck so we could enjoy the magnificent views. In fact throughout the trip we found it hard to stay away from the deck areas.

Passing the Spirit of Tasmania II

It was announced over the intercom that we would be passing through the Port Phillip Bay heads at 11.15am and passing the Spirit of Tasmania II around 2pm. The Spirit of Tasmania II would be traveling in the opposite direction.

As I watched the Spirit of Tasmania II pass at 2pm I realised that this was just how our vessel looked. I wondered if there were passengers on the other ship taking photos of us? I watched it until it disappeared in the direction of Port Melbourne.

Seasons restaurant

We had a lovely lunch in the Seasons restaurant. I had ravioli with porcini mushrooms in arrabiata sauce. Greg tucked into mediterranean risotto with pumpkin. We shared dessert – ice cream with Tasmanian berries. Everything was just yummy. That sea air builds up a good appetite they say. Perfect for enjoying delicious food.

Rocked to sleep

After lunch, we retired to our Ocean View Recliners, for a nap. Getting comfortable with the supplied pillow and blanket felt so good. We were able to recline the seat quite a bit, more than I expected. So it was pretty easy to catch 40 winks as the movement of the vessel rocked us to sleep. We felt very refreshed when we awoke.

Almost there

Land ahoy – we could see Tasmania! This was getting even more exciting. I watched the beautiful island draw nearer and nearer.

Devonport looked oh-so-lovely as we slowly headed for the dock. When we had berthed we stayed on deck for a while watching the ship workers do their jobs. Soon the first cars started to drive off the vessel.

It was over, but we had thoroughly enjoyed our Spirit of Tasmania trip. What a great way to start what we knew would be yet another fun-filled holiday on this treasure of an island.

Gay Travel With a Spiritual Focus

26 Nov

Author: Howie Holbenbr

br
If youve ever traveled in a group or with a tour group, then you know how the dynamics of the group can impact the entire travel experience. Although there are many other considerations, such as time, money, and itineraries, that go into the making of a good travel experience, its who you travel with that can have the greatest impact. Travel companies that focus on gay travel are well aware of this and strive to provide the best travel experiences for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender communities. The very best attempts also provide opportunity for spiritual growth and a greater sense of self awareness.

With the assumption that people of like intention can glean more from a travel experience, companies like Spirit Journeys put together itineraries that allow members of the gay community to share the experience of spiritual growth while coming in contact with places with mystical qualities and natural beauty. In this sense, gay travel can be infinitely more meaningful and memorable. Without the strain of being grouped with non-gays, an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding is created, thus providing a greater opportunity to learn and share. With spiritual growth as the main goal of a trip, the sites and activities become more than something to gawk at, but something to experience.

There are many advantages and benefits to this type of experience. A major draw of this type of gay travel are the facilitators. Instead of providing you with mere tour guides who are there to explain what you are seeing, facilitators are there to help you personally experience the mystical aspect and beauty of the ancient sites. While they are not there to tell you how or what to feel, they are a great encouragement and can actually enhance your spiritual journey. If there are skills required such as yoga meditation, the facilitator will gently guide you in this area. They are there to also help you have fun.

Visiting sites of ancient civilizations, experiencing the mystical qualities found there, the wealth of information provided by the facilitators, and the sought after enlightenment that many experience, all make this type of gay travel not only extraordinary and life changing. For this reason, this type of travel can be called a pilgrimage. Pilgrimages are not trips that anyone takes every year. However, in days gone by, that has been the case for some cultures. More importantly, pilgrimages for the gay community are very necessary for spiritual growth and happiness.

Have Car, Will Travel: Vacations By Car

26 Nov

Author: Levi Quinnbr
Source: articledashboard.combr
br
With vacation season in full force, you may be planning a getaway of your own. Once youve figured out where youre going, you have to decide on how to get there. Some places require traveling by air; its the only way to get there, so the decision is an easy one. If its a location to which you can drive, however, youre faced with a choice: should you drive, or should you fly?
Everyone has preferences for modes of travel, of course. For many, flight is the preferred option. From a certain perspective, it makes perfect sense?you spend less time getting there so you can spend more time being there.
Traveling by car takes time. It wont have you kicking back on the beach or relaxing in the mountains ASAP There are stops for fuel, stops for bathroom breaks, stops to eat or stretch your legs. Theres the potential of getting lost, of taking the wrong turn and having to repeatedly peruse a road atlas to find your way?of having to backtrack, grumbling all the while because youve gone twenty miles out of your way.
On a road trip, there are fuel expenses. There is wear and tear on the car, and the ever-dreaded possibility that it may break down and need repairs along the way. If youre traveling with others, a drive can entail close contact with those people for extended periods of time. Whether youre alone or have company, it will definitely entail being largely confined to a small space for the duration of the drive.
Given all this, you may ask: why would anyone choose to drive? Why would anybody embarking on a vacation opt to spend one or more days driving, when it would be so much easier, quicker, and more convenient to just book a flight?
The fact is, theres something special about taking a long trip by car. It has nothing to do with efficiency, or getting to where youre going as quickly as possible. It has to do with viewing your vacation as an adventure, a journey?and appreciating the whole journey, including the process of getting there.
When you travel by airplane, you step into a metal compartment. Within an hour or two, presto! You simply step back out in a different place, usually none the worse for wear and in the same state of mind, more or less, as when you stepped on. For all intents and purposes, you might as well have been transported between places, much like in the old science fiction movies or television shows.
By contrast, when you travel by car, theres a sense of having moved through space, of having gone somewhere. Sure, there was a starting point and an ending point, just as in air travel?but theres a keen awareness of having traversed the miles. You were there for every one of them.
All those places you might have peered at from your window seat in an airplane? You were there. You saw the roll of the land, and the shadows cast on them by the sun. They werent just crosshatched impressions of fields and cities, unimaginably distant. They were fields and cities: up-close, personal, and real.
For some people, the old adage, Its not about the destination, but about the journey still rings true. If youre one of these people?and you happen to be planning a vacation?driving is still the only way to go./pbr

Four Secrets of a Spendthrift Travel Jockey

26 Nov

Author: Ted Conklingbr

br
These days everyone is looking to make their dollar stretch a little further. I applaud thriftiness, but I dont believe that you should deny yourself either. So what is a wander-lusting person to do? I asked my good friend Dan, to share his secrets. Somehow, although we have the same job and the same pay he always manages 4 or 5 big trips every year. Dans four simple tips to cheap travel are listed below.

PLAN: I love a sudden road trip to Vegas as much as the next person, but if you want to find the deals you have got to plan ahead. Booking flights, buses, trains in advance can often reap huge rewards. Dan told me that last year he saved over $2000 on a package to Ireland by booking four months in advance.

OFF-SEASON TRAVEL: To truly pinch pennies, take holidays during the off-season. Not only will this take less of a toll on your wallet, but you will enjoy better service everywhere you go. You will find fewer crowds on the beaches, shorter lines to get into attractions, and service industry people that try harder for your tip. Going during the lulls between peak tourist seasons also allows you a more genuine glimpse into a culture of a nation.

USE REWARDS: Dan says that he pays for at least one trip a year with rewards points. Although, he has the cash to pay for his daily purchases he will use credit cards constantly. Remember, most cards dont charge interest as long as you pay the balance in full by the end of the month. In essence, you are receiving a free vacation or airfare.

SEARCH: We have all seen the commercials for different discount vacation firms, but some surprising deals can be found in free local newspapers. Dan says that hell look through these and contact travel agencies that offer deals. When they state specific dates for travel, hell balk and ask to be placed on a mailing list for upcoming deals. This helps him to stay ahead of the pack when shopping and to forecast future trips with a budget conscious mind.

There you have it, four secrets of the frugal world traveler. There are no secret handshakes required, no decoder rings necessary. All you need is a little foresight and a willingness to hunt for bargains. Now, you too can travel the world on the cheap.

Traveling Fashion For Women

25 Nov

Author: Rebecca Stevensonbr
Source: isnare.combr
br
Being out and about can be difficult on you, especially when it comes to fashion. No matter why you are traveling, you are going to want to have a fashion sense about it. You need to have clothing with you that will look great in lots of situations, and that will allow you to look just as great as well. When it comes to traveling fashion for women, coupons are going to be important, because they can provide you with a way to find that fashion for less. In order to find the best fashion, and to have the right fashion for traveling, you should have several different coupons that you can use to buy things that will look great on you, no matter where you go.

First of all, when you are traveling whether for work or for pleasure, you have to keep in mind the idea of limited space. Therefore, for both purposes, you want to find items that you can wear that look good in combination with each other, but that can be switched for even more uses. Spend coupons on things like t shirts and tanks and long sleeve shirts that can be layered in different orders. Some nice shirts that look great with a skirt for a casual meeting, and great with jeans for a day of sightseeing are also important because they allow you to get two or three days worth of wear out of them, which will impact your clothing style and selection. You will be able to bring more things along if you use coupons to buy things that can be layered and reused. This will all allow you to make sure you make the most out of the items that you have.

For many people, this means that youll be working with several different styles, and when you travel, this is very important. Whether you are going for work or for pleasure, there is a chance youll need different things – clothing for the day, for the afternoon, for the evening – and clothing to wear to different events – meetings, sightseeing, dinner out. Therefore, using coupons to buy clothing for your trip is a great idea because youll be able to get the clothes that you need and fit them into your budget, and your suitcase.

Remember, when you are buying clothing for a trip using coupons you want to buy clothes that are durable as well. You are going to need to be sure that you are wearing clothing that is long lasting, especially when you travel. When you are traveling, your clothing will get worn out much more easily, so it is important to make sure that you spend your money on clothes that will be long lasting. Also, keep in mind that youll need to pack them, so dont buy clothing for travel, even with coupons, that you arent able to pack in a suitcase. You want to travel easily and effortlessly, and this is the best way to do that.br

What Are the New Travel Laws Regarding Passports For Canadians Traveling to the US?

25 Nov

Author: Adriana Notonbr
Source: ezinearticles.combr
br
Since the tragic events of 911, there have been many changes to the laws when traveling from Canada to the United States. These changes are designed to enhance security between the two countries. When a Canadian travels to the US, they should be aware of the new travel laws regarding Passports.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) is one law that Canadians should learn about. It is a US law mandating that all travelers, including US and Canadian residents, provide a passport or other approved secure document when entering the United States. This law applies to all travelers, including children.

Canadians who travel by plane to and from the United States must provide one of the following documents: a passport or a NEXUS card to be presented at all U.S. airports when coming back to Canada. For example, if a Canadian travels to the US by vehicle, but returns to Canada by plane, a NEXUS card will be required before they can board the flight.

When Canadians enter the United States by land or water, they are mandated to provide ONE of the following documents: a passport; a NEXUS card, a Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card, an enhanced drivers license (EDL) or enhanced identification card, or a Secure Certificate of Indian Status.

For Canadians under the age of 15, they must provide verification of their Canadian citizenship, such as an original or a photocopy of a birth certificate, or an original citizenship card. Canadian citizens 18 years of age or under who are traveling with an organized group may provide proof of Canadian citizenship only. This makes it easier to make school trips to the US.

There have been some concerns about meeting all of the requirements so the US has provided some flexibility on the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) law. However, the Canadian Government warns that the extent of this flexibility is the decision of the U.S. officials.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative was created after the implementation of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 (IRTPA). This act mandated that every traveler have a passport or other approved document that proves ones identity when coming into the United States. The purpose was to help the Department of Homeland Security identify a traveler quickly.

As of August 15, 2007, the Canadian Government has implemented measures to make renewing ones passport easier. The Simplified Passport Renewal Program permits Canadians who meet specific eligibility criteria to renew their passport using a less complicated form and without submitting such documents as proof of citizenship, supplementary identification, and a guarantor declaration. Under the renewal program, one will just need to submit the small form along with two new photos, the application fee, and their last passport. As well, Passport Canada enacted a simpler guarantor policy, which allows most adult Canadian passport holders to act as guarantors for first time applicants.

In order to avoid any travel disruptions, before Canadians travel, they should be aware of the entry requirements for the United States.

Kids Travel Tips – Let The Games Begin

br
Have you ever traveled with kids? Traveling with kids can be a very enjoyable vacation or it can be a visit through the land of insanity. Every parent searches high and low for the best kids travel tips prior to heading out across the great unknown with their darling children in tow. The constant banter of arguments in the back seat, one sibling repeatedly touching the other or the other siblings invading the invisible line of the other siblings side of the car, can continue until the parents eyes want to cross.

Regardless of where youre going on your vacation, chances are at least one of the kids will get bored along the way. Thats why its essential to have a variety of kids travel games in mind before you even leave the house. Being prepared is crucial. That way when your kids start shouting Mom, are we there yet? you can respond with something better than just No.

Games of license plate and state sign alphabet are great for older kids that can read but the young travelers often find that they have nothing to do but whine and cry. The following suggestions wont make the trip any shorter but they might make it peaceful. Scavenger Hunt: Here is a travel game that would delight older kids and younger travelers. You would have to make up a list of things to look for in advance. For instance, you could include things like yellow flowers, flashing lights, a hotel, a billboard with a picture of a car on it, a boat on a lake, or anything else general and relatively easy to spot.

Perhaps you are going on a trip to somewhere you have been a time or two before, for instance to grandmas house. In that case, you could make a specific list that includes items the kids will see en route while traveling. You could even make a little quiz with questions like Whats the name of the town where we stopped at the rest area?

Kids Travel Tips Technological Highpoint is DVDs

To beat the little rascals at their own games, it is easy to take control over the back seat while still driving the car. The most valuable kids travel tip is one that a parent can buy at any shopping mall or electronics store, the mini DVD player. The gift of silence is golden when traveling with young children on a long road trip. Even parents who hate the amount of television their children watch on a daily basis may find the idea of owning a traveling DVD player more palatable than listening to their children whine.

Artistic Kids Travel Tips

As with all that is good, while on the long road trips with children, they will soon tire of the DVD player as well, so variety must be provided to encourage the tiny tots to get along with one another. As kids travel tips go, the arts and crafts shoebox is a project that can be made at home and left in the car for just such occasions.

Creation is quick, easy and cheap. First, take a shoe box, a long piece of elastic, blank paper (cut to fit inside the shoebox), crayons, pencils, pens, small ruler, stencils and any other small items for arts and crafts that are child friendly for arts and crafts in a vehicle while driving. Cut two small slits (a bit smaller than the width of the elastic) in the lid of the shoebox. Be sure to make the cuts at each side of the width on one end only, leaving the length complete. Once the cuts are made, take the elastic and string it through both holes. Tie a knot or sew the two ends together on the inside of the box lid.

The elastic works as a holder to keep the sheets of paper in place while your child uses the lid of the box as a drawing table. The box should be completely assembled when in use as the lid is stronger when on the correctly place on the box. The box itself holds all supplies inside, the art box is complete within itself; it provides, table, storage and security tab to hold art paper in place during the artists creative expression./pbr
