Pet Travel in the 21st Century

With the advent of the global village, airconditioned cars and pet friendly hotels, the average pet may reasonably expect to get further than the local convenience store. The inclination to travel with a pet does however place a burden of responsibility on the owner and some planning is called for.
Irrespective of how far you are going to travel with a pet, there are some basic requirements that you need to consider. Not all of these will apply to all journeys but the relevant ones should be addressed before departure.
1) The comfort and safety of the animal during the trip.
2) Feed and water requirements
3) Environmental Temperature control within the mode of transport.
4) Planned regular comfort stops for especially dogs if going by car
5) How you will control the pet during routine stops/unplanned interruptions
6) Relevant paperwork (vaccination certificates, permits etc) if crossing
any political boundaries.
International pet travel involves crossing at least one international border and regardless of the method of transport, you need to be aware of some basic requirements that you need to adhere to.
1). The country of destination determines the pet health requirements.
You must therefore establish what these requirements are before you travel with your pet to another country. The requirements will almost
certainly include a variety of vaccinations against common diseases
and perhaps a veterinary health certificate. This certificate can only be issued by a qualified veterinarian after he/she has examined your pet.
2). Quarantine measures
Some countries will insist that your pet spends some time in quarantine.
The purpose of quarantine is to allow the pet to be monitored and to
satisfy the authorities that your pet is not carrying any disease.
Most countries have specifically designated quarantine facilities that are
registered with the Veterinary authorities. In other words, your pet cannot be held in quarantine just anywhere. In addition, you will be responsible for all boarding costs incurred during the quarantine period.
3) Long distance travel requires some preparation
International Pet travel may sound glamorous, but in reality it will be a stressful undertaking for the pet and as a responsible owner you need to do everything possible to minimise the level of stress.
A thorough health check up and the provision of an approved and correctly labelled pet carrier is a good starting point.
Also, if your pet is going to be separated from you for the trip then
check out the credentials of the company that will be responsible
for your pets health, comfort and safety during the trip.

Pet Friendly Travel – 10 Tips for Hassle-Free Travel with Yo

30 Nov

Author: David Busterbr
Source: articleage.combr
br
In the United States alone, over 60 million households have one or more pets. Pet owners in 15 million of those households travel with their pets, and the majority stay in pet-friendly lodging. Fortunately, pet friendly hotels, condos and vacation home rentals do exist.

If you will be traveling with your pet, here are some pet friendly tips to remember for safe and trouble-free travel.

1 – When you make your reservation, double-check that pets are allowed. An important advantage of reserving online is that you can see – in writing – whether or not pets are permitted and any restrictions. Online, you can print out your reservation receipt that includes the pets allowed information. Verbal reservations leave more room for misunderstanding and miscommunication. If reserving by telephone, ask the reservation person to mail you a confirmation receipt that includes the pets allowed information.

2 – Is your pet an experienced traveler? If not, you should begin getting your pet more accustomed to traveling. Begin by making your car a fun place for your pet. Get in the car with them, play with them, give them a treat – have them enjoy being there with you. Then take a short drive with them. Gradually increase the length of time and distance that you drive with them. Before making a long trip with your pet, the idea is to have them comfortable with being in the car for extended periods of time.

3 – Remember that securing your pet while traveling in the car is crucial for their safety and yours. Consider purchasing a dog safety harness for your pet to use while traveling in the car. If you have a station wagon or SUV, you can purchase a vehicle barrier that keeps your pet confined to the rear area. They are usually sold at pet stores or are available online.

4 – Be sure that your pet has an identification tag and wears it while on the trip. The tag should have your pets name, your name and phone number. If possible, use your cell phone number, a home number and the number of where you will be staying.

5 – Carry a photograph of your pet with you on your trip. If your pet should ever become lost, youll be able to show others exactly what your pet looks like instead of just relying on a verbal description.

6 – Check with your vet for any recommended vaccinations appropriate for your trip – exposure to ticks while hiking, exposure to other dogs while boarding or heartworm prevention if your dog will be exposed to mosquitoes are examples of important preventative measures to take before your trip. If your pet is a dog, have an up-to-date rabies tag for your dogs collar. If you decide to day board your dog while on vacation, you may be required to show paperwork proof of the rabies vaccination.

7 – Once you arrive at the pet friendly lodging, inform the check-in person that you have your pet. You can inquire if there are any restricted areas where your pet should not be taken. Pet friendly lodging staff should be very accustomed to answering these kinds of questions and will appreciate your awareness.

8 – In your hotel room, condo, cabin rental or vacation home rental – never let your pet use the furniture or beds to sit, lay or sleep on unless youve covered the furniture or bed with your own cover. Place your pets food and water containers on a mat or newspaper in the bathroom, where cleanup will be easier. When staying in pet friendly accommodations, you may choose to feed your pet outdoors.

9 – If youll be leaving your pet alone in the room or vacation rental, make sure the front desk or rental agent knows. Be sure that you leave your pet secured in their travel container or crate if housekeeping staff will be entering the room at any time to clean. You certainly dont want a housekeeper to enter and be surprised or even attacked by your pet! A pet may also run out of the room when housekeeping enters if left unsecured.

10 – Be very careful in warm or hot weather with leaving your pet in the car. Even when the outside temperature is only in the 70s or 80s, the interior of a vehicle can reach 100 degrees and higher, especially when parked in the sun. It doesnt take long at these temperatures to cause serious or even fatal harm to your pet.

Traveling with pets and staying in pet friendly lodging can be lots of fun – after all, your pet is part of your family too. Just using common sense and planning ahead makes for an enjoyable and surprise-free vacation.br

If you love to travel and are always after fun adventures with your friends and family, then a lightweight travel trailer is perfect for you. With a spacious interior and cargo area, a travel trailer provides a safe and secured temporary abode in your favorite destination, without your having to leave the convenience and comforts of your home.
The lightweight versions of towable travel trailers retain all the modern conveniences of the traditional vehicles, plus they come equipped with the necessary space and amenities for sleeping, cooking, dining, showering, and relaxing.
The versatility and practicality of the lightweight trailer makes it a hot item among the newly introduced RVs. Typically, these trailers weigh less than 400 pounds and are usually less than twenty-six feet in height. Whether you own a small vehicle like a light pickup truck, SUV, or a minivan, these trailers are designed to assure you of a convenient and safe towing experience, plus you get a better fuel mileage. They can also be lowered for storage in a garage or carport. The gasoline-consuming wind drag is also eliminated since they can be lowered to car-top level during travel.
Several lightweights have special features like a push-button slide-out capability that enables travelers to expand the kitchen area, as well as the sleeping, living, and dining spaces with twice as much floor area. For a well-protected and durable floor, linoleums are installed, even under the carpeted areas of the trailer, and the walls are usually highly insulated so as to keep you warm during winter and cool during summer.
Aside from the basic water and lighting systems, many recreational lightweights have an added entertainment center and upgraded lighting package that promise a luxurious and comfortable trip.
Whether youre planning on a weekend getaway or a quick camping trip, lightweight trailers provide comfort, security, and luxury that turn your usual vacation experience into an extra special one.

Online Business Meetings – Using Technology to Cut Business Travel Costs

29 Nov

Author: Stephenbr

br
If you have a small business, you obviously envision it becoming a big and well established enterprise. As the business grows beyond city, country and continental borders, communication modes need to be upgraded. This is why as you nurture your business you have to think of the best way to cut traveling costs while maintaining a high level of productivity during business meetings. In conventional business setting, designated employees would ideally travel across the world to make business deals or to attend conferences that would market the business. These business trips entail booking a hotel for accommodation, booking a meeting room, having transport arrangements to various meeting points, setting aside traveling allowances as well as organizing for meals for the traveling persons. We all agree that employees are bound to make fraudulent claims after a trip. Some people misuse these business trips and turn them into their personal expeditions at the expense of their companies. Other employees turn the trips into a shopping spree. Monitoring the steps of your employees while they are away requires a lot of time and money thus many organizations would not think of spending funds to check on their employees whom they have sent away on business. The best way to curb problems arising from traveling far to have meetings is to invest in a good online meeting room, with a powerful computer which can transmit multimedia. Have a web-cam, headsets if needed and install necessary software to support communication as the meeting goes on. It is also important to have a standby generator that ensures the meeting is not affected by power blackouts. With technology, you can link to your customers, suppliers and business partners at the comfort of your office. In the long run, if you compare the money used to set up an online business meeting and that used to send staff to a physical meeting point, you will definitely settle for online meetings.br

Get Ready For the Spring Road Trip

28 Nov

Author: Susan Siewertbr

br
I dont know about you, but when the snow drifts start disappearing in my back yard, I think spring camping road trip! Just the thought defrosts my winter weary spirit. Day dreaming, exploring and planning my camping season begins with the important task of getting the travel trailer ready for the road. (We own a 1977 Airstream. Keeping current on maintenance is a high priority for us!) Learning the hard way, we begin spring maintenance in the fall while winterizing the trailer for winter storage. As we shut the trailer systems off, we test and inspect each for needed repair. Making note of essential repairs in the fall gives us time to budget funds and schedule repair time before its time to travel. We create a separate wish list for non-essential repairs and upgrades. Pre-planning in the fall has reduced the stress of on road surprises for us.

Our family hates vacation side trips to find a local RV dealer for unexpected repairs. Wasting precious vacation time camping in the dealer parking lot is not our idea of exploring the scenic back roads! By scheduling repairs for early March, we give our dealer plenty of time to complete work before the spring rush. Most often the trailer is left winterized, in case of continued freezing temperatures. De-winterizing, the first weekend out, is a task we can easily accomplish on our own and it doesnt take long to do. That first annual family camping trip is our spring road trip to test our wheels. Although on road surprises still occur occasionally, we are far more prepared to face them with humor, if we have done our fall homework. Sometimes on road surprises become our favorite travel tales. Ive included our RV/Travel Trailer Maintenance Check List. Think Spring! Think spring camping road trip!

Adventure Travel: The Most Exhilarating Must Do Trips

28 Nov

Author: Gemma Earnshawbr
Source: articleage.combr
br
Ever since the man could walk, he traveled. At first, we traveled to escape harsh climate and find food, but as we evolved, we started traveling for fun. Thus appeared travel destinations and travel guides. As time passed, more and more people started traveling to various locations, for the landscape, traditions and thrills.
Here are a few travel locations that are sure to give you your thrills and kicks, somewhat like a top four, I guess, but dont trust me – go check them out yourself out!
1. Himalaya
By far the greatest mountain range in the world, the Himalaya have captured the imagination of philosophers, mystics, mountaineers and empire builders from the earliest ancestors of contemporary Hindus and Buddhists to the present day. Mount Kailash, home of the greatest of the gods, and Meru, centre of the Hindu and Buddhist universe, rise from their surrounding ridges of the central Himalaya. From the high slopes to the foothills, people have carved out an often-meager existence in the harshest of environments with determination, subtlety and imagination enriched by powerful cultural identities. Tribal peoples living often at high altitudes have made their living from their tough environment through trade over the highest passes in the world, while farmers have developed agriculture on the man-made terraces of the warmer, lower-lying valleys and hills of the southern ranges. Although the mountain environment gives a common character to the whole region, each hamlet has its own identity. The villages of the arid high-altitude plateau of Ladakh could scarcely be more different from the homesteads of the monsoon forests of Arunachal Pradesh.
2. Kilimanjaro Climb
Just three degrees south of the Equator is the 5,895m (19,340ft) high, permanently snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, Africas highest mountain. It offers one of the best opportunities in the world to climb a peak at high altitude without needing technical climbing ability. Any normally fit, healthy person prepared for some physical exertion and exercise should be able to complete the ascent to Uhuru Peak, which involves approximately 70 kilometers of walking in total, and no technical climbing.
3. Torres Del Paine in Patagonia, Chile
Near the fjord area of Tierra Del Fuego and the Beagle Channel one may visit the famous Torres Del Paine National Park on the southern edge of the Patagonia Ice Cap. The area is easy to get to from Punta Arenas with transportation of buses, taxis and minibuses. It is possibly the most famous national park in South America with 60,000 visitors last season. It is some 100 km north of Puerto Natales. A 2422 sq. km park was given the World Heritage status in 1978 by UNESCO.
It gets its name from three wonderful and very prominent polished columns of pink granite, the Towers of Paine (Torres Del Paine).
Here you may go backpacking and trekking, or you can join programs to do the mountain climbing as well. Nandu and Guanaco (Ostrich and Alpaca like animals) are frequently seen in the park refuge. There is a broad diversity of fauna y flora. Backpackers should have experience with overnight trips in rough country; those who desire to make ascents should have mountaineering ice and snow climbing experience.
4. Amboseli Safari
Amboseli National Park is one of Kenyas most popular parks because of the stunning view it displays of nearby Mount Kilimanjaro, the worlds tallest freestanding mountain. When you go on your Amboseli Safari, be sure to get the famous photograph of elephants with the unforgettable views of Kilimanjaro in the background!
Streams from Kilimanjaro surface in the centre of Amboseli, creating swamps that attract and support a rich diversity of wild animals and birdlife.
As Amboseli is easily accessible, it forms a popular part of many of our safari itineraries. Amboseli is one of the smaller game parks in Kenya and the vegetation ensures that the animals are easy to spot. Lions can easily be found and can occasionally be watched stalking their prey.
Buffalo, zebra, giraffe, gazelle and other plains game are plentiful in the park and hippos live in the open waters and swamp channels. The elephants found here are surprisingly relaxed around safari vehicles; they were largely unaffected by ivory poaching and have some of the largest tusks.
Nothing beats the experience of adventure travel, so pack up your rucksack and give it a go!

Traveling Through Europe

28 Nov

Author: Jonathon Hardcastle -br
Source: articledashboard.combr
br
The summer of 2005, my friend and I decided to apply for a summer program as part of our graduate degree and travel from United States to Europe and specifically to Brugges in Belgium, so as to attend an intensive seminar at The College of Europe on Politics, Policies, Lobbying and the European Union. Although I have never visited Belgium before, I was really excited to discover, while browsing the internet, that I was about to visit one gorgeous and historical city of the Old Continent, while enhancing my academic knowledge and meeting new people.

Before leaving the US we printed any information we could find regarding the citys tourist locations, interesting cafes and historic buildings. Although Brugges is a very small town, it offers a lot of possibilities to those interested in exploring its excitements. But even if it surpassed our expectations, visiting only one European town or country seemed a waste for such a trip. Thus, we decided in advance to research the opportunities a young graduate student has while traveling around in Europe and the most convenient, cheap and interesting way to go from city to city and country to country was via train. The Eurorail trains are the simpler way people have to visit a variety of European destinations, as boarding a train actually offers to the adventure-seekers the possibility of having an extraordinary trip and admiring the countryside in the meantime.

In fact, upon the completion of the summer program, we packed our bags and traveled from Brussels to Amsterdam. The Netherlands capital was a combination of beauty and adventure. The city streets, the people walking or bicycling around, the nice weather and its countless river docks create a unique combination of images, which are food for hungry eyes-like ours. Since we had less than 48 hours available to see as much as possible, we decided to pay a visit at the Van Gogh Museum, walk the Red District by night, and of course take the tram to travel through the city and gaze its unbelievable beat.

Next stop was Paris, France. Lucky as we were to find an available and affordable room as soon as we got off the train station, the next thing was to find a map of the city and its incredible metro system and travel around to check everything! Notre Dame, bridges, the Eiffel Tower, the Bastille, Champs-?lys?es, small cafes and long walks across the Seine River or through the area of Montmartre, made our stay in Paris unforgettable. In fact, one of the best pictures we got from this trip was in front of the Arc de Triomphe and we took it by ourselves-both faces appear on the frame. Monte Carlo was our next and most expensive destination, but its beaches and sun gave our trip a legendary feel.

Next, we visited Italy. Florence and Venice, two of the most important trade cities in Europe offered us some life-time opportunities. Historical monuments, paved streets, canals, museums, restaurants and Italian cafes convinced us that Italy is actually much more than an interesting destination. In fact, I fall-in-love with almost every single building we crossed and by the time we had to catch our plain back, I though we have made a huge mistake; our eight day trip should have lasted a lifetime./pbr

10 Tips to Planning Your Dream Road Trip

27 Nov

Author: Carol Whitebr
Source: articleage.combr
br
Everyone has a travel dream. For many it is hitting the road for a relatively unlimited time, either here or abroad.
But how many people actually get from the dreaming to the doing?
Heres a list to inspire you to go live your personal vision of a road trip dream.
BRAINSTORM WHAT YOU WOULD WANT TO DO ON YOUR TRIP
Everyone has dreams about what they would like to do if they just had the time to take that long, unencumbered vacation. What are those things for you? Why not take a weekend away and begin to formulate your plan? Dream big.
PICK A THEME OR TWO
Once you have identified all the ideas you might enjoy doing, there is a sad reality: even in a year, you cant do it all. So organize those groups of ideas into a theme for your trip. Maybe it is seeing all the national parks, or seeing a baseball game in every major-league stadium, or painting a scene in every state. The ideas are endless depending upon your interests.
RESEARCH YOUR IDEAS
Now the fun begins. To further refine your ideas, get on the Internet and browse, order visitor guides from the locations you plan to travel in, buy some books about your destinations, talk to people who share your passions, subscribe to some online newsletters. Get excited, get motivated to go.
START SOCIALIZING THE TRIP WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS
One of the most difficult parts of actually doing a trip of a lifetime is gaining the support of your family and friends. Its not that they really dont want you to have this incredible experience; it is that we are all resistant to change, and your leaving means adjustments in their lives. Start early, talk often, but make sure they know you really are going to do this.
DECIDE ON YOUR MODE OF TRANSPORTATION
More research is in order. Do you want to camp or stay in motels — or a combination? Do you want to move every day or stay in one spot for awhile? How important is it to have your belongings around you? All of these issues and more will influence your choice of transportation.
DEVELOP A BUDGET TO MEET YOUR GOALS
There are many ways to finance your dream trip, but at some point you do have to figure out the details. Once you know what you want your trip to entail, how long you will be gone, and how you will travel, it is time to put pencil to paper.
MAKE LISTS OF WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO LEAVE ON YOUR TRIP
There is so much to think about that it may seem overwhelming. You begin to doubt that you can make it happen. But you can. Just take a deep breath, and work through it step-by-step.
PICK A DATE TO LEAVE AND START WORKING TOWARD IT
This is VERY important. Once you have a real date to leave, everything will begin to fall into place and your dream will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. People will help you; you will have a special theme and trip to plan on. Then, before you know it, you will be on your way.
INCLUDE FAMILY AND FRIENDS IN GETTING READY TO GO
Everyone will want to feel included, and feel that you have taken care of their needs while you are gone. One of the best ways to do that is to let them help you plan it and help find solutions to the issues that arise. Every family has issues to manage, dont be discouraged by them.
SAY GOOD-BYE AND HAVE THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE!
The work is done and the date is drawing near. Let your friends throw you a going-away party or two. Take pictures and exchange e-mail addresses in order to stay in touch. Give them your website address, so they can follow your travels. Wave good-bye and embark on the journey of a lifetime!

The Whites decided that the time had come to just take off and travel. Once they were on the road, people peppered them with questions, not so much about what they were doing (everyone has their own dream!), but about HOW they actually made it happen. It was with the encouragement of want-to-be travelers everywhere that Live Your Road Trip Dream was created.br
